1 Flashcards
What are three factors assoc with development of asthma?
Predisposing factors, causal factors, contributing factors
What are the predisposing factors that can increase one’s susceptibility to asthma?
Atopy, gender, socioeconomic factors
Gender and asthma?
Before puberty boys are more likely than girls to have it; As adults women over men
Socioeconomic factors and asthma
inner-city living assoc with tobacco, pollution, roach allergens-predisposing factors
What is the Asthma Predictive index?
indicator-Major criteria -parental history; physician diagnosed atopic dermatitis; minor-allergic rhinitis, wheezing apart from colds. eosinophilia .>4%(wbc)
Difference in Modified asthma predictive index
major-allergic sensitization to one or more allergens; minor-allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts;
What are causal factors?
can sensitize airways and lead to onset of asthma; allergens, occup sensitizers and viral infections like rsv
What are allergens
dust mites, fur-bearing allergens, roach allergens, molds and pollens
What are occup sensitizers?
Encountered in occupational exposures ie. wood dusts, metals, dyes, gums
What are the six categories of triggers?
exposure to causal agents; aggravating disorders, environment, medications and food additives, emotions and hormones, exercise
what are aggravating disorders?
Respiratory viral infections, sinusitis, rhinitis, and GERD
Environment triggers
cold, high humidity
Drug triggers
NSAIDs. aspirin, beta-blockers, food additives-sulfites
What are the contributing factors
Viral resp infections, low birth weight, smoking, pollutants
Most common predisposing factor
atopy
