Monarch
Name for a king or queen
Secretary of State
Elizabeth’s most important privy councillor. The person she was closest to in the government
Courtiers
The people who lived in or near the same palace of Elizabeth. They were her key advisors, servants and friends
Privy council
Senior men of the court, mainly noblemen, approx 19 members (all chosen by Elizabeth), they met at least 3 times a week
Parliament
House of Lords : not elected, bishops
House of Commons : elected by wealthy landowners. Mainly gentlemen
Passed laws and offered advice to Elizabeth
Coronation
Ceremony when the monarch is crowned
Patronage
Giving nobles important positions in the government and in return Elizabeth could keep them loyal and supportive
Faction
A group at court
Lords lieutenant
Every county had one of these, members of the nobility and many were on the privy council.
In charge of raising local people to fight as soldiers if necessary and were part of the local government (militia)
JPs
Large landowners who kept law and order, such as sit in courts, give out relief to the poor. They were unpaid but gave them power and status
Militia
Military force of ordinary people who agreed to fight in an emergency
Sheriff
In charge of legal affairs. Such as delivering prisoners to court, collecting taxes
Parish constable
Helped with policing such as keep order in inns and taverns and carry out punishments e.g: whipping, worked under JPs
Night watchman
Patrolled streets at night looking for criminals
Overseer of the poor
Organised and collected the poor rate from everyone in the parish and gave out this money to those in need
