1 Flashcards
How many chromosomes does each human cell have?
46
Is eye colour inherited or environmental?
Inherited because the gene is passed down by your parents
Who produced the first picture of DNA?
Rosalind Franklin
Where are chromosomes found in the cell?
In the nucleus
What is the shape of DNA?
A double Helix
What is the definition of a gene?
A section of a DNA that gives you a certain characteristic
How many genes do we have?
Around 20,000
What are the base pairs of a DNA?
G-C and A-T
What is natural selection?
Natural selection is where organisms with characteristics that make them better at competing survive and less successful competitors die.
What is one copy of all your chromosomes called?
Your genome
What is a species?
Same group of organisms that breed with each-other to produce fertile offspring
What happens when two different species reproduce?
They produce infertile offspring
What is selective breeding?
Only allowing chosen individuals with desired features to breed so their offspring have those features as well e.g. Dogs with large ears would breed with other large eared dogs so their offspring has large ears
What is variation?
The differences of individuals in the same species or od two different speices e.g. some humans are male, some are female but they are the same speices
give an example of environmental variation
Accent, language, diet, lifestyle ect
