#1 Flashcards
Pharmacokinetics
Pharmacokinetics describes the effects of the body on drugs (absorption, distribution, excretion)
pharmacodynamics
pharmacodynamics describes the action of drugs on the body such as the mechanism of action and therapeutic and toxic effects.
Fick’s law of diffusion
Rate = (C1-C2) x (Permeability coefficient x Area)/
Thickness
pharmacodynamic tolerance
down-regulation or desensitization- a reduction in the number of receptors
pharmacodynamic sensitization
Up-regulation- increase in the number of receptors
COMPETITIVE ANTAGONISM
Reversible competition for agonist receptor binding sites without inducing a biological response. (Blocks binding)
NON-COMPETITIVE ANTAGONISM
Irreversible binding with receptor preventing agonist binding to receptor
