1. 3 PHYSICAL PROCESSES AND TECTONIC HAZARDS Flashcards
What is an earthquake?
-shaking of ground caused by sudden motions along faults
what is a fault?
-fracture in rocks that make up earths crust
what is the epicentre?
-point at surface of earth directly above hypocentre
hypocentre?
-point within earth where an earthquake rupture starts
what are plates?
-massive slabs that make up outer layer of earths surface
-movements along faults trigger earthquakes
what are seismic waves?
-waves that transmit the energy release by an earthquake
what are primary waves?
-vibrations caused by compressions
-spread quickly from fault at rate of 8km/s
-can travel through solids liquids and gases
-least destructive
-very fast
what are secondary waves?
-move slower
-vibrate at right angles to direction of travel
-only travel through solids
what are love waves?
-surface waves with vibration occurring in horizontal plain
-high ampllitude
what measures seismic waves?
-seisometer
-measures amount of ground shaking during earthquake
what is soil liquefaction?
-cause buildings to tilt and collapse
-tilt up to 60 degrees like in japan
-land adjacent to rivers can present hazard by sliding under low friction conditions across a liquefied soil area known as lateral spreading
-creating large fissures in ground surface
-damage to roads and bridges
landslides?
-secondary hazard
-slopes weaken and fail
-as many destructive earthquakes occur in mountainous areas
-landslides can travel several miles
-growing in size
-picking up trees, boulders, cars
