Local area network (LAN)
A small network limited to a single collection of machines and linked by interconnecting devices.
Internetwork
Is a networked collection of LANs tied together by devices such a routers.
Wide area networks (WANs)
Interworks that are geographically dispersed and use third-party communication.
Internet
A worldwide public internetwork that uses standard protocols (TCP,IP,DNS,HTTP)
Intranet
a private network such as a school or company network.
Extranet
Allows limited and controlled access to internal resources by outside users.
What are chunks of data across the network usually called
packets/frames
Packet
a chunk of data with a source and destination IP address added to it.
Frame
a packet with the source and destination MAC addresses added to it.
Encapsulation
process of adding IP addresses and MAC addresses to chunk of data.
Header
Information added to the front.
Tralier
Information added to the end.
Sever Operating system
OS installed on a computer designed to share network resources
Server Computer
A computer’s primary role in the network is to give client cmoputers access
Server software
Responds to request for network resources from client software
