-3 Rule: MWR- Is an alternate required?
A
- Alternate is NOT needed if the following conditions are met:
- M: Monitored NAVAIDS (Unmonitored = alternate required)
- Wx: Weather = or greater than min + 400-1 for ETA + 1 hour (wx less than min + 400-1 means alternate is required)
- R: Radar not required (radar required = alternate needed)

-6 Rule: WxGRAMS - Can the airport be used as an alternate?
A
- Airport can be used as an alternate if the following conditions are met:
- Wx: Worst Wx greater than or equal to min + 400-1 for ETA + 1 hour. (Worst Wx less than min + 400-1 = cant be used)
- G: GPS is not required (if required = cant be used)
- R: Radar not required (if required = cant be used)
- A: No ANA symbol on approach plate (if present, cant be used)
- M: Monitored NAVAIDS (unmto = cant be used)
- S: Surface based controlled airspace (if uncontrolled at surface = cant be used)

VFR EXCEPTION RULE:
A
- Alternate not required/airfield may be used as an alternate IF descent, approach, and landing can be made VFR.
- (MIA - field elevation + 500) round up to nearest 100 = VFR exception

-1 Rule: Wx- Can you fly to the airport?
A
- Forecast weather at ETA + 1 hour must be = or greater Wx minimums for the approach.
- Helicopters: reduce visibility by 50% (not less than 1/4 mile or 1200 RVR)
- Can’t reduce visibility on COPTER ONLY approaches or if annotated on approach plate.
