What is 5’s assignment
Man on O5 (always), plus control the lane
What is 4’s assignment
Man on O4 (3 front) or drop to corner (2 front), plus control the baseline traps
What is 1’s assignment
Guard in front (3 front) or to right (2 front), prefer O1, plus control half court corner traps
What is 2’s assignment
Guard in front (3 front) or other guard (2 front)
What is 3’s assignment
Guard in front (3 front) or drop to corner (2 front)
Reaction when guard dribbles in open
Stay with your man assignment and switch zones
Reaction when guard dribbles to screen
Switch man assignments and stay in zone assignment
Reaction when guard passes
No change, stay with both your zone and man assignment
Reaction when guard shallow cuts
Stay with your man assignment and follow the cutter
Reaction when guard deep cuts
Switch man assignments and stay in your zone (unless O1 dominant and need D1 to stay in man)
Reaction when wing baseline cuts
Follow cutter as a man assignment from 3 or 4
Reaction when guard drives
Play man, help from 4 and 5 if needed
On ball positioning
Play man, optional double from either side
Off ball positioning
Play offside help: anticipate passing lanes, rebounding position, and watch cutters
General guidelines
Pressure the ball, front the low post, block passing lanes, help on penetration
Reaction when guard gives up dribble
Double trap when near sideline or half court, help must anticipate outlet, don’t react if near high post
Defensive weaknesses
Not getting back into zone on the break fast enough, quick perimeter passing and redirection
