1,2,3,4 Terms Flashcards
Chambers of the heart
Four chambers
2 Atria: right and left atrium
2 ventricles: right and left ventricle
2 atrioventricular valves: tricuspid, bicuspid (mitral)
2 semilunar valves: pulmonic, aortic
Location of heart
- Mediastinum
- 2/3 of the heart muscle lie to the left of the midline
- Apex of the heart lies just above the diaphragm
- Base approx. level of the third rib
Size of the heart
Average, approx. 5 inches, 12 cm in length
* 3 inches, 7.5 cm in width
* Shape is cone-like
* Approx. size of owner’s closed fist
Heart Wall
Epicardium
Myocardium
Endocardium
Pericardium
Close, two layers sac that surrounds the heart
Mediastinum
Central section of the thorax (Chest cavity)
Coronary sulcus
The atrioventricular groove that’s around the outside of the heart and device to atria from the ventricles
Pericarditis
An inflammation of the serous pericardium
Epicardium
The smooth outer surface of the heart
Myocardium
The thick middle layer of the heart composed primarily of cardiac muscle cells and responsible for the hearts ability to contract
Endocardium
The inter-most layer of the heart composed of thin connective tissue
Tricuspid valve
Name for its three cusps; located tween the right atrium and the left ventricle
Chordae tendinae
Find courts of dense connective tissue that attach to papillary muscles in the wall of the ventricles
Mitral or tricuspid valve
Similar in structure to the tricuspid valve but only two cusp and is located between the left atrium and the left ventricle
Semilunar valves
Serve to prevents the backflow of blood into the ventricles, each Val containing three similar (or moon shaped) cusps
