Federalist Papers
pen name used by Hamilton, Madison & Jay to keep their identities from being discovered.
Publius
First 10 amendments to the Constitution. Ratified and went into effect in 1791.
Bill of Rights
An order to produce an arrested person before a judge
Habeas corpus
A law that declares a person, without a trial, to be guilty of a crime
Bill of attainder
A law that makes an act criminal although the act was legal when it was committed
Ex post facto law
A new provision in the Constitution that has been ratified by the states
Amendment
An executive’s ability to block a particular provision in a bill passed by the legislature
Line-item veto
rule by the people
Democracy
letting every important issue be decided by popular vote.
Direct democracy
government in which authority has been given to elected officials
Republic
republic in which members of House of Representatives are elected in democratic elections, members of Senate(initially)were selected by state legislature, and courts are staffed by appointed judges.
U.S.-
ratified in 1920 prohibited states from denying the vote to women.
Nineteenth Amendment
Presidential authority to selectively eliminate individual items in large appropriation bills, expansions in certain income-transfer programs, and tax breaks. Also, left Congress free to craft bills in ways that would give president few opportunities to veto favored items.
