When should gloves be worn?
When handling and processing all specimens of blood and body fluids.
Also when cleaning and decontaminating spills of blood and other body fluids, and when disposing of bulk blood supplies used in body fluid procedures.
When should gloves be changed?
After contact with each patient and after handling specimens.
Gloves should also be changed during use if torn and when heavily soiled, even during use on the same patient.
What is a key principle of glove use?
Work from ‘clean to dirty’.
What should be limited to prevent contamination?
Limit opportunities for ‘touch contamination’ - protect yourself, others, and the environment.
What should you avoid doing with contaminated gloves?
Don’t touch your face or adjust PPE with contaminated gloves.
What should you avoid touching with contaminated gloves?
Don’t touch environmental surfaces except as necessary during patient care.
What should you do with gloves after use?
Discard in appropriate receptacle.
Never wash or reuse disposable gloves.
