Economic and political system where a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.

A person who is out to conquer new territory.
Conquistador
Divided the newly discovered lands outside Europe between Portugal and Spain along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde islands.
Treaty of Tordesillas
System in which a country pays for its imports from one country by its exports to another.

Triangular Trade
The sea journey undertaken by slave ships from West Africa to the West Indies.
Middle Passage
An acute contagious viral disease that spread a lot during the Columbian Exchange.
Small Pox
Western Hemisphere. North and South America and certain Atlantic and Pacific oceanic islands.
New World
A person who is legal property of another and is forced to obey them.
Slave
Eastern Hemisphere. Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Old World
An Italian explorer, navigator, and colonizer. He has been credited for opening up the Americas to European colonization.
Christopher Columbus
A Spanish conquistador who led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire and brought large portions of mainland Mexico under the rule of the King of Castile in the early 16th century.
Hernan Cortes
Conquistador that conquered the Incan Empire. Sailed from Spain to the New World on November 10, 1509.
Francisco Pizarro
A person who signs and is bound by indentures to work for another for a specified time especially in return for payment of travel expenses and maintenance.
