1 Flashcards
Atom
the smallest unit of matter, being made of protons, neutrons, and electrons
Molecule
being made of a group of atoms
Element
a pure substance that can’t be split by any physical means
Compound
two or more different elements coming together that can’t be split by physical means
Mixture
two or more materials coming together that can be split by physical means
Homogeneous Mixture
a substance that you’re unable to see through
Heterogeneous Mixture
a substance you can see through
Where are Protons located?
the nucleus of an atom
A.P.E.
Atomic Number = Protons = Electrons
M.A.N.
Mass - Atomic Number = Neutron
Where are Neutrons located?
The nucleus of the Atom
Where are Electrons located?
They circle the nucleus of the atom
What are the charge of all three sub-atomic particles?
Proton=positive, Neutron=Neutral, Electron=Negative
Valence Electrons
Electrons found farther out than most electrons
What is true about elements placed in the same column (group or family) in the periodic table?
They display similar properties and features
Describe how to find out the number of valence electrons for elements in groups 1 & 2 and 13-18.
The number is equal to the atoms in the group
Give an example of some common mixtures.
Salt water, Air, Coffee
Where can you find metals on the periodic table?
the entire left of the table (except hydrogen) and until you reach the metalloids
Where can you find nonmetals on the periodic table?
on the right with the metalloids and including hydrogen
What are the elements called that are on the staircase (or zig-zag line) called?
Metalloids
Draw a picture of a Carbon Atom
