Q

What is a relay operation?

A

Generally this procedure uses 3 or fewer engines to supply the attack engine(s) directly from the water source through a supply line that should not exceed 3000 ft from the incident

Q

What mode do fill site engines with electronic governor controls need to be in when drafting?

A

Draft and fill in RPM mode pressure mode can cause damage to the tanks. If in pressure mode and not generating pressure the pump will think it’s cavitating causing the built in safety mechanism to shut down the pump after a short period of time.

14
Q

What may the WSGS have to consider for incidents?

A

The need for more than one fill sit based on this critical information, so it is important to monitor, collect, and transmit this mission-critical information

16
Q

How many full sites should the Fill site engine set up?

A

Establish two fill stations positioned sufficiently apart to ease of vehicle movement. Tankers have priority and should have a designated fill position.

17
Q

For a direct fill nursing operation what should the first engine do if the dump site is less than 200’

A

Lay in or hand jack hose back to the dump site

18
Q

For a direct fill nursing operation what should the first tanker do?

A

If less than 200’ position out of the way at dump site and serve as direct fill tanker. If 200-1000’ proceed with the 1st engine to incident scene and supply water to 1st engine. If more than 1000’ layout supply line from predetermined location to 1st engine. First tanker should drop Siamese at dump site before proceeding to first engine

19
Q

What should additional apparatus do on a rural water supply house fire incident?

A

Report to the incident scene dump anticipated equipment/ personnel and move the vehicle to a staging area out of the way of travel. Engines may be directed to become apart of the water shuttle

20
Q

What should the first tanker do if the first engine doesn’t drop a Siamese?

A

The tanker should drop one

21
Q

With proper preplanning relay operations are feasible up to what distance?

A

Relay operations with 4 inch hose are feasible at distances over one mile

22
Q

What resources should be assigned to a fire boat to assist them with setup for water supply operations?

A

An engine company

23
Q

Fire boats can be used for?

A

Can be used as drafting unit to relay, supplement an established water supply, or supply a fill site for a shuttle operation

24
Q

Where are dry hydrants typically installed?

A

Ponds, lakes, or streams, but could also be found attached to swimming pools.

25
Q

How often should dry hydrants be back flushed and tested?

A

Every 6 months

26
Q

Where are storage tanks normally found?

A

Underground and set up for drafting operations.
Due to tank design it is impossible to draft all water from the system
Systems should be checked every 6 months for proper operation

27
Q

What are the typical sizes of dump tanks?

A

1500 gal- 10’3 x10’3x30”
2100 gal- 11’3”x11’3x30”
2500 gal- 12’3x12’3x30”
3000 gal- 13’3x13’3x30”

28
Q

What is the max flow of a low level suction strainer? And how low of a water level does it work for?

A

Max flow for a low level strainer is 750 GPM
Allows engine company drafting to make the best use of all available water in a dump tank down to a water level of approximately 2 inches

29
Q

What piece of equipment allows engines the ability to get water from dump tanks without having to draft?

A

Low-profile jet siphon strainer

30
Q

How does a low-profile jet siphon strainer work? And as a general rule of thumb what is its minimum flow

A

By charging 1 3/4” hose line a continuous is established. This device can be used to transfer water from one dump tank to another. Minimum flow of approximately 500 GPM but varies by manufacturer.

31
Q

How much water does a jet siphon move up to?

A

800 GPM between tanks as needed

32
Q

How does an automatic air primer work?

A

When placed in automatic mode, this device will allow for the primer to automatically begin priming whenever the discharge pressure drops below 20 PSI

33
Q

What is the rule of thumb for deciding between relay vs tanker shuttle

A

If the distance to the water source is greater than a 3- pumper relay, a tanker shuttle is likely a better choice

34
Q

What is the max distance between engines in a relay?

A

Maximum 1000’ between engines

35
Q

What should clappered siamese starting pressure be?

A

70 psi

36
Q

What distance is referred to as a short lay?

A

200’ or less

37
Q

What distance is considered a long driveway?

A

200’-1000’

38
Q

At what minimum rate and psi should tankers be filled at?

A

1000 gpm @100 psi one at a time
