An inherited deficiency or absence of pigment in the skin, hair and irises due to a missing enzyme necessary for the production of melanin
Albinism
Common skin condition that occurs when oil and dead skin cells clog the skin pores
Acne Vulgaris
The partial or complete loss of hair, most commonly on the scalp. Also known as baldness
Alopecia
Most common form skin cancer; usually caused by overexposure to the sun
Basal Cell Carcinoma
Thickened skin that does not have an identifiable border
Callus
A collection of abscessed hair follicles and subcutaneous tissue; also called boils
Carbuncle
An acute, rapidly spreading bacterial infection within the connective tissues of the skin
Cellulitis
Blue discoloration of the skin caused by a lack of adequate oxygen
Cyanosis
The removal of dirt, foreign objects, damaged tissue and cellular debris from a wound to prevent infection and to promote healing
Debridement
An ulcerated area in which prolonged pressure causes tissue death. Also known as a bedsore
Decubitus ulcer
Inflammation of the skin
Dermatitis
The middle layer of the skin, which contains connective tissue, nerve endings, hair follicles, sweat glands and oil glands
Dermis
A large irregular area of purplish discoloration, larger than 10mm in diameter
Ecchymosis
A form of dermatitis associated with severe itching, redness, blistering, and possibly oozing sores
Eczema
The most outer layer of the skin
