Greek civil war (5)

•Britan pulled out it’s backing to the anti-communists in Feb 1947 due to costs
•March 1947 $300 m aid sent by USA
• USSR didn’t help the Greek communists
Cominform (4)

•Stalin convinced that the USA was planning an anti Soviet alliance
•Purpose= to unite the actions of communist groups so the communist party- functioned as a united whole
•It was a response to the Marshall plan
Comecon (3)
• to provide economic aid to communist countries
•Gave Stalin power over eastern Europe
•Meant to rival Marshall plan but Communist countries didn’t have enough money
Marshall plan (4)
•5th June 1947
•Lasted 5 years, brought $13.5 b to 16 West European countries
•Brought about a device of containment and dollar imperialism
•Stalin accused the USA of using the plan to dominate Europe- believed it was used to stop spread of communist movements eg France 1947 had 1.7 m communist party- members
Berlin blockade (4)
•June 1948
•The day after the Deutsche mark was introduced, the soviets blocked all road and tail routes into western zones + into west Berlin
•Stalin said if the western powers don’t leave west Germany then west Berlin will starve- General clay and Bevin thought this wasn’t an option so sent provisions through airlifts
•230,000 tonnes of supplies dilivered in April 1949 at it’s peak

•Was to settle international disputes
1955- West Germany joined NATO and Stalin made Warsaw pact to counteract this
