1 Flashcards
Low force driving
Smooth driving method which eliminates need for defensive driving tactics, evasive maneuvers, or other methods to avoid accidents.
Constantly aware
Low force driving results in lack of g forces
Reduction of accidents, maintenance costs, discomfort to passengers
Increase fuel efficiency and safety
Acceleration
Slowly, take foot off brake and allow automatic tranny to start movement. Slow acc. Helps comfort, wear and tear on vehicle, conserves fuel and oil
Braking
Brake smoothly and early, should be coasting up to stops. Brake sooner than expected
Rear tire concept
Driver should see rear tires touching ground of car in front over hood. 20ft space, about another rig between. Provides escape route and improves field of vision
Following distance
4 sec. Add 1 sec for each hazard. Following distance increase as speed increases
Rear end cushion
In event of tailgater; move out of way. No braking or any lights
Side space cushion
Middle lanes safest, avoid fast/slow lanes. Provide more space and field of vision. Do not linger in blind spot and do not pace other vehicles. Maintain open space and create fov space around rig
Signaling
Two way interaction. Confirm other drivers are aware of your intentions
Eye movement
5 sec scan. Zone nearest, middle, farthest, nearest, mirrors(rear). 1 sec each zone. Most immediate zone not included, use peripheral
Mirrors
Checked once every 5sec. Left Mirrow 3x wider view. Closer and larger mirror more view. Mirrors can also be obstructions
Never exceed speed that
Is acceptable for conditions and or road/traffic
Slow down due to
Increased roll risk, visibility reduction(curves/hills)
Top speed of 20- , 40- , 50- mph
-3 , -4 , -5 seconds clear visibility
Reduced road grip: wet, pack snow, ice
Reduce speed by: 25%, 50%, 75%
