What are some circumstances that can convert commensals into opportunistic pathogens?
A
- Movement to another site on the body, poss. due to injury, illness, or poor hygiene (includes gut wounds)
- Immunocompromised state in the immunosuppressed, elderly, neonate, injured, ill, or otherwise vulnerable
- Antibiotics, which can throw off normal floral growth
