1 Flashcards
What is a closed system?
type of system where there are only energy interactions and no mass interactions.
What is an open system?
type of system where both energy and mass interactions take place.
What is an isolated system?
type of system where neither energy nor mass interactions take place.
What is a system in thermodynamics?
It is a fixed mass or region in a space (control volume) where our study is focused.
What are surroundings in thermodynamics?
Everything external to the system.
What are intensive/intrinsic properties?
Properties which are independent of the mass of the system. e.g. Density, temperature, pressure.
What are extensive/extrinsic properties?
Properties which are dependent on the mass of the system. e.g. Volume, enthalpy, entropy, kinetic energy, potential energy.
What is a process?
It is a change of state.
What is a reversible process?
A process which can be reversed in direction following the same path and without leaving any effect on the system and surroundings.
What is an irreversible process?
A process which is not reversible.
