07 - Urinary Incotinence Flashcards
1
Q
(urinary incontinence)
- more common in dogs or cats?
- causes = anatomic and functional defects of the bladder and urethra (bladder pressure greater than urethral pressure)
A
- dogs
2
Q
(Primary sphincter mechanism incompetence - PMSI)
- aka idiopathic/hormone responsive incotinence
- typically occurs in what?
- see decreases in what two things?
- dx?
- most common tx?
A
- spayed female dogs
- maximal urethral closure pressure and functional urethral length
- usually dx by exclusion
- phenylpropanolamine (^ urethral tone) best
3
Q
(ureteral ectopia)
- ectopic ureters much higher incidence in female or male dogs?
- Cx?
- dx?
- are ectopic ureters usually uni or bi?
A
- females
- variable incontinence, history of urinary incontinence to time of weaning, UTI
- intravenous pyelography, pos contrast vaginography, urethrocytoscopy
- bi (90%)
4
Q
(ureteral ectopia)
(tx)
- surgical correction is based on the location of the ectopic ureter and associated pathology
- can do ureteral reimplantation, remove bad kidney and ureter
A
5
Q
(detrussor-urethral dyssynergia)
- what is this?
- often idiopathic
- occurs in what kinds of dogs?
- tx?
A
- urethra fails to relax when the detrussor is contracting (excessive smooth musc or somatic tone)
- large male dogs
- phenoxybenzamine (a-adrenergic antagonist)
6
Q
(patent urachus)
- if urachus fails to close by birth, urine leaks from near the umbilicus
A
