07 Human Abilities (Perceptual Causality onwards) Flashcards
what is perceptual causality and what are the implications?
Perceptual Causality is like when our brain connects two events because it seems like one event caused the other. For example, if you see a switch and the lights turn on, your brain links the switch (cause) to the lights coming on (effect).
Implication: To make our brain think one thing causes another, like the switch causing the lights to turn on, it’s important that the response is quick and clear.
what is recall?
info reproduced from memory
what is recognition?
presentation of info provides knowledge that info has been seen before
what are some benefits of hearing and audio?
- provides a richer, more robust environment than with mere graphics
- present further info when the bandwidth of visual info has been exhausted
- sounds make tasks easier
- audio feedback can complement graphics to reinforce a concept in the user’s mind
What are the implications of the ability limits due to old age?
Hearing Loss - older people cannot hear higher frequencies
Should should not be too high pitched
Lens of the eye yellows with age and absorbs shorter wavelengths
Sensitivity to blue is reduced further
What are the implications of the limits of human abilities?
Cognitive Load
Saturated colors requires more focusing than unsaturated colors
No excessive use of saturated colors in UIs
What are the implications of the ability limits due to human
disabilities?
Color blindness - Trouble discriminating colors
red-green deficiency - Cannot discriminate colors dependent on red and green
Inappropriate use of color can severely reduce the performance
of systems that are built
How do you overcome these limits during UI design?
Use unsaturated colors so that there will not be alot of focusing required
Cognitive chunking to reduce the cognitive load needed to process information
Use lower pitch sounds to cater to the older people
Don’t use blue for text or small objects!
Avoid red and green in the periphery
