Q

What’s is a Continuous Pilot?

A

Burns all the time regardless of whether the burner is fired

Least efficient pilot

Q

What is an expanding pilot?

A

It is a hybrid of the continuous pilot. The flame is always lit, but at a much smaller size than required to light the main burner. On a call for heat, the pilot gas supply is increased to enlarge or expand the flame size to effectively light the main burner

Q

What is an intermittent pilot?

A

Is only ignited when there is a call for main burner ignition (usually by an electronic spark). The pilot remains lit throughout the burner cycle and is extinguished when the main burner turns off.

(Off when burner off)

Q

What is an interrupted pilot?

A

Similar to intermittent pilots, except that the pilot flame is extinguished when the main burner has been ignited. The main burner continues to operate and is monitored by a separate flame sensor

(Off when burner on)

Q

Describe an aerated pilot

A

Air mixed with gas

Primary air inlet is susceptible to to blockage by lint or dust causing flame to become carbonizing (yellow)

Frequently cleaned and serviced

Also known as Bunsen or Linting Pilots

Q

Describe a non-aerated pilot

A

Straight gas no air

Uses secondary air to achieve combustion

Must be adjusted to not cause soot build up

Also called non-linting or non-primary pilot

Mainly found on gas clothes dryers and gas cooking ranges

Q

Describe a post aerated pilot

A

Most popular and commonly used

Same characteristics as aerated pilot, but does not have a mixing tube and is therefore less susceptible to blockage

Also called incinerating or target pilots

Q

What is the function of a Proved Pilot?

A

Most pilot flames will have a secondary function and that is activation of a flame failure device. Proved pilot shuts off burner when no pilot flame is detected

Describe safe hook up installation procedure

A

Burner shut off pilot continues to burn

DO NOT USE WITH PROPANE (heavier than air)

Pilot connection is BEFORE the gas valve

Q

Describe 100% safe hook up installation procedure

A

Safety control shuts off both the pilot and the burner

Burner off pilot off

Pilot connection is after the safety device on the control valve

Use for propane

Describe a thermopile

A

Several thermocouples put together connected in series

More voltage = more control

Also called powerpiles
