06 materials Flashcards
What is a tensile force?
A forces that stretches a spring.
What is a compressive force?
A force that compresses a spring.
What is spring constant?
A measure of stiffness of a spring.
What does a large spring constant mean?
More force is required to stretch it.
What is the correlation between force and extension?
they are directly proportional to each other.
What is the elastic limit?
The point where the spring would loose elasticity if it were stretched any further.
What is hooks law?
force is proportional to extension.
What is “k” in f=kx
force constant.
What does a higher gradient mean on a force extension graph?
higher spring stiffness.
What is the equation and unit for stress?
force/area, pascals
What is the equation for strain?
extension/original length
What is the equation for young modulus?
E = stress/strain
What is ‘E’?
Another way of describing Young’s modulus, it is a property of a material and measured in pascal’s.
