06 Magnetism and Electromagnetism Flashcards
Name the three magnetic elements
- iron
- nickel
- cobalt
What is the name for metals like steel?
Magnetic alloys
Define: Magnetic field
The region where a agnetic force is felt
like poles…
repel
opposite poles…
attract
Where are magnetic fields strongest and why?
- Strongest at the poles
- Because the field lines are closer
What are domains in a magnet?
They are a region in which the magnetic fields of atoms are grouped together and aligned
What are the 3 points to remember when drawing/ stating the formation of a uniform field?
- Lines are striaght
- Lines are parallel
- Lines are equlally spaced
How doy ou plot a magnetic field? (With a magnet and a compass) (5 points)
- Draw dot around magnet
- Drow dot close to magnet
- Place tail of plotting compass on dot
- Draw dot at compass point
- Repeat steps 3-4
Define magnetically hard (3 points)
- High coercity
- High hysterisis
- Retains magnetisation (permanently magnetised)
Define Magnetically soft: (4 points)
- Low coercity
- Low hysteresis loss
- Loses magnetation easily
- Ideal for transformer cores
What is a transformer core? (Describe the peice of apparatus)
A static device that transmits power from one source to another through electromagnetic induction (has high magnetic permability)
[The round thing.]
Magnetic field strength is _____ everywhere (fill the blank)
the same
How does one make a uniform field?
Place 2 bar magnets close together
