06-09: NMES Flashcards
1
Q
NMES = FES
A
- Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation
- Functional Electrical Stimulation
2
Q
What is NMES
A
- Innervated: E-Stim of peripheral nerve causes stimulation of skeletal muscle
- Denervated: Attempt to maintain muscle (little research support)
3
Q
Continuous Delivery
A
- Used for spasticity to achieve muscle fatigue
- High tone, trying to relax muscle to function
4
Q
Co-Contraction Delivery
A
- Used to stabilize joint while performing functional activity or in order to be able to perform functional activity
- Can also use single channel for bipolar application and re-education
5
Q
Reciprocating Delivery
A
- During functional activities such as gait, when one muscle group contracts, then another
6
Q
Primary indication
A
- Facilitate return of controlled functional muscle activity
- Maintain postural alignment until recovery occurs
- Re-education of muscles
7
Q
NMES Parameters
A
- Frequency: 35-50 pps
- On Time: 6-10 sec
- Off Time: 50-60 sec (prevents muscle fatigue)
- Pulse Width: 200-600 microsec
- Rx Time: 15-20 minutes, several times/wk
- Ramp-up Time: 2 sec, 5 sec
8
Q
Other attachment/devices
A
- Used at intensity only strong enough to facilitate desired activity in function
- Foot switch (foot drop for toe clearance with walking)
- Bioness (UE/LE FES splint) or Walk Aide
- Parastep
