What is density?
Density is the ‘compactness’ of a substance.
It relates the mass of a substance by how much volume it takes up.
What is the equation for density?
Density = mass / volume
What is Hooke’s law?
The change in length is directly proportional to the force applied.
Double the force you get double the change in length.
What is the equation for Hooke’s law?
Force = k (stiffness constant) x /\L (chage in length)
If Hooke’s law is being obeyed, then what will a force against change in length graph produce?
A straight line that goes through the origin.
If the force against change in length graph starts to curve, what does this say about Hooke’s law?
The Hooke’s law is no longer being obeyed as it is no longer a proportional relationship.
What is the point of where the straight line ends known as?
The limit of proportionality.
What is the gradient of the graph equal to?
Stiffness constant.
What is the stiffness constant?
The force needed to extend an object by 1m.
