05 Disturbing the Carbon Cycle Flashcards
how does deforestation, fire, and combustion of fossil fuels disrupt the balance between photosynthesis and respiration.
deforestation results in less plants/tree’s, therefore less photosynthesis occurs. Fire and fossil fuel production adds more co2. The balance of photosynthesis is disturbed because the excess of co2 cannot be removed from the atmosphere (more co2 being produced with less vegetation to remove it).
“think globally. act locally”. How can this relate to the increase of atmospheric co2 and your life in reversing it?
By thinking globally we can be aware of the world wide problem. By thinking locally we can alter our lifestyles so we can do our part in reducing the output of co2
what are some obstacles that stand in the way of reducing human disruption of the carbon cycle?
1) some people may not want to alter their lifestyle to reduce their co2 output2)some believe that their contribution would be so small that its not worth it to change their lifestyle3)some don’t believe that global warming is actually occurring4)some believe that global warming is a good thing (especially in a cold country like Canada).
some Canadians are not concerned about global warming. how would you respond to one of these people?
(some people such as skier’s may not want shorter winters), -we do not know all the effects of global warming, -the sea level will rise which could flood cities such as montreal, Vancouver, Halifax and Churchill-could bring drought to praries if heat increased and to the boreal forest-could be stressful to plant and animal life and some may be susceptible to disease and/or extinction
what is cellular respiration?
the process in which plants use the glucose acquired from photosynthesis and convert its excess into starches and oils (to store its energy). Plants also change glucose into cellulose which is an important component in wood and plant fibres.
