There was a clock above/over the entrance.
Above and over have similar meanings.
The plane flew low over the houses
We normally use “over” to mean horizontal movement.
Thick black smoke hangs over the town.
Someone had spread a sheet over the body.
And we use “over” for an area or surface.
There are well over fifty thousand people in the stadium.
We prefer over before a number
Temperatures will rise above freezing.
But we use above with a measurement that we think of as vertical, such as temperature.
The two leaders discussed world affairs over lunch.
(= while having lunch)
The horse jumped over the wall.
Was the ball over the goal-line?
Somehow we had to get over/across the river.
We also use over for movement to the other side, or position on the other side of aline.
We met at the entrance, below/under the clock.
Below is the opposite of above; under is the opposite of over.
Mike crawled under the bed in an attempt to hide.
The town lies under a thick black cloud of smoke.
We do not normally use below for a horizontal movement or for an area or surface.
