Each fire station should maintain TWO Newborn Safe Surrender Kits, which consist of the following:
•Procedures for accepting a newborn.
•Coded ankle identification bracelets for newborn (2).
•Coded wrist identification bracelet for adult (1).
•Kit for person surrendering the newborn in a postage paid envelope which includes: medical history questionnaire in english/spanish and coded wrist ID bracelet for person surrendering newborn.)
•There is a place to take notes regarding the newborn surrender. (These include: date, time, location, person(s) involved, sex of the newborn, hospital transported, and date and time child protective services were notified. )
Procedures for accepting a infant:
- Welcome person.
- Confirm infant is under 72 hours or younger (accept infant even if it appears older than 72 hours).
- Assess infant for medical needs
- Notify MFC of still alarm “Safe Surrender” at the station and request a paramedic RA. (MFC will create a “SAFES” incident type and EMS Capt attached.)
- Locate and open Newborn Safe Surrender Kit.
- Paramedics assume custody of infant, initiate base contact and tsp to EDAP or PMC.
- Paramedics will notify by telephone the Dept of Children and Family Services (DCFS) once at receiving hospital.
- Officer at fire station shall notify the BC who will forward info through channels to BES and DDC.
