What is the role of an Explosives Detector Dog?
Search for explosives, firearms, ammunition, and conduct post-blast investigations.
What does a Cadaver Detector Dog do?
Search for human remains.
What is the function of a HUSAR Dog?
Part of the Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Team, assists with natural disasters and major incidents, searches for missing or trapped persons.
Can police service dogs be used for crowd control?
No, they shall not be used for crowd control or to intimidate, coerce, or frighten a suspect.
Who has the discretion to use a dog at a scene?
The handler or a Supervisory Officer – PDS.
How can a police officer request a police dog?
Contact the communications operator for a General Purpose, Narcotics/Firearms Detector, Explosives Detector, Cadaver Detector, or HUSAR dog.
What should an officer do if a Narcotics/Firearms Detector, Cadaver Detector, or HUSAR dog is unavailable?
Contact a supervisory officer – PDS, Officer in Charge – PDS, or supervisory officer – Toronto Police Operations Centre (TPOC).
What should an officer do if an Explosives Detector dog is unavailable?
Contact a supervisory officer – PDS, Officer in Charge – PDS, any on-duty member of PDS, or supervisory officer – TPOC.
What must be ensured when requesting a police dog for a crime scene?
The area containing the scent must remain uncontaminated, and a perimeter should be established.
