04/26 Flashcards
what is the activity coefficient
it is the intermolecular interaction between solute and solvent
what factors go into the activity coefficient
ionic strength
charge of ion
size of ion
how does the ionic strength affect the activity coefficient
as the ionic strength (u) increases, the activity coefficient decreases
why does the ionic strength affect the activity coefficient
as more ions are dissolved in the solution, it’s harder for the ions to see eachother and makes more of them dissolve
this pushes the reaction towards the right and more products will form
how do the charges of ions affect the activity coefficient
highly charged ions have a larger decrease in the activity coefficient
how do the sizes of the ions affect the activity coefficient
very small iona have very large hydrated spheres
is a solution with low ionic strength salty or not
not very salty, less ions
when can we neglect to include the activity coefficient
when the ionic strength is low (lower dilution) we can assume that the activity coefficient is 1 and can be neglected
when can we not neglect the activity coefficient
when u (ionic strength) is high, there is a higher concentration of ions with more solubility, which results in more deviations in the activity coefficient and it cannot be neglected
