Q

Acetylcholine (ACh)

A

a primary neurotransmitter of the autonomic nervous system released by:

  • all pre-ganglionic nerves
  • post-ganglionic Para- nerves
  • some post-ganglionic sympa- nerves (50% sweat glands)
  • all somatic nerves

Q

Co-Transmitters

A

Packaged and released with primary NTMs into synapse.

  • may elicit faster or slower responses that modulate action of primary NTM
  • may play role in feedback inhibition at nerve terminals
  • may function as primary transmitter in non-cholinergic/non-adrenergic nerves
  • eg. purines (adenosine, ATP), peptides (Cholecystokinin, somatostatin, supstance p), and NO
