02 The 11 main Organ Systems Flashcards
Skeletal System
The principle organs of the skeletal system are the bones and ligaments. It functions to support and protect movement, mineral and fat storage, and blood production
Muscular System
The principle organs here are the skeletal muscle and tendons. This system functions to support movement, posture, and heat production
Nervous System
The principle organs are the brain, spinal cord, nerves and sensory organs. It is the system that control, regulates, and coordinates the other system. It is also responsible for sensation and memory
Integumentary System
The principle organ is the skin. It functions to protect and regulate temperature and for sensation.
Cardiovascular System
Also called the circulatory system, the principle organs of the cardiovascular system are the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries. This system functions to exchange and transport materials.
Respiratory System
The lungs, bronchial tree, trachea, larynx, and nasa cavity are the principle organs of this system. They function to perform gas exchange and maintain acid-base balance.
Digestive System
The stomach, small and large intestines, esophagus, liver, mouth, and pancreas are responsible for the breakdown and absorption of nutrients and the elimination of waste
Urinary System
The excretion of waste, balance of fluid and electrolytes, and maintenance of acid-base balance are the functions of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.
Reproductive System
Reproduction, the continuation of genetic information and the nurturing of offspring, is the key function of this system. In men, the principle organ are the testes, vas deferens, prostate, seminal vesicles, and penis. The female reproductive organs are the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina, and breasts.
Lymphatic & Immune System
The lymphatic system is responsible for maintaining immunity and fluid balance. The principle organs are the lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, spleen, thymus gland, and the tonsils.
