02. SOUNDS Flashcards
The two types of sound
- WANTED
- UNWANTED
Sound must always have the following
- SOURCE
- PATH
- RECEIVER
Sound travels faster in denser media
SPEED
The unit which sound intensity is defined for architectural purposes
DECIBEL
Instrument by which sound intensity is measured
DECIBEL-METER
The fluctuation in the atmospheric pressure caused by the vibration of air particles due to sound wave
SOUND PRESSURE
The distance of sound wave travels during each complete cycle of vibration measured in meters or feet
WAVELENGTH
Subjective attribute of an auditory sensation in terms of which sound may be ordered on a scale of soft to loud.
LOUDNESS
Minimum intensity that is capable of evoking an auditory sensation in the ear
THRESHOLD OF AUDIBILITY
Minimum sound pressure level which stimulates the ear to a point which is painful
THRESHOLD OF PAIN
The number of displacements or oscillations that a particle undergoes in one (1) second
FREQUENCY
Unit of measure of frequency; numerically equal to cycles per second
HERTZ (Hz)
The attribute of an auditory system which enables us to pinpoint sounds on a scale extending from height of low frequency-subjective response of human hearing to sound frequency
PITCH
Sound sensation having pitch
TONE
The four natural elements that affect sound
- TEMPERATURE
- CLOUDS
- WIND
- BODIES OF WATER
Sound reflected off a surface, usually one which is hard, rigid and/or flat
SOUND REFLECTION
Sound Reflection - uniform reflection
FLAT SURFACE
Sound Reflection - sound dispersion
CONVEX SURFACE
Sound Reflection - sound concentration
CONCAVE SURFACE
Sound waves absorbed into a material upon contact change of sound energy into some other form
SOUND ABSORPTION
Occurs when sound waves are dispersed equally in a room
SOUND DIFFUSION
Acoustical phenomenon which causes sound waves to be bent or scattered around such obstacles as corners, columns, walls, beams, etc.
SOUND DIFFRACTION
Change of sound wave direction as it moves from one medium to another of different density.
SOUND REFRACTION
Sound which penetrates through surface
SOUND TRANSMISSION
The totality of all sounds within the room when the room is unoccupied
AMBIENT OR BACKGROUND NOISE LEVEL
The sound level difference between the untreated space and the acoustically treated space
NOISE REDUCTION (NR)
An MDF based acoustic overlay board for use with robust standard detail concrete floor constructions
ACOUSTIC DECK 19
A slimline MDF based acoustic overlay board for use with PCT timber floor constructions
ACOUSTIC DECK 19 TIMBER FLOORS
An enhanced performance MDF based acoustic overlay board for timber floors.
ACOUSTIC SOUNDBOARD SUPREME 24
A simple but incredibly effective acoustic overlay wall system to drastically reduce sound transmission
SILENT BOARD
Used to prevent sound transfer through partitioning or party walls in all forms of construction where there is any point of contact
ACOUSTIC ISOLATION STRIP
A premium acoustic partition roll which can be fitted between the studs in metal or timber wall partitioning systems
ACOUSTIC QUILT SOUNDPROOFING
Allow flexible and efficient space utilization combined with excellent acoustic performance in areas such as offices, hotels, exhibition centers, studios, and many other applications
MOVABLE ACOUSTIC WALL
System for walls, floors and ceiling that combats low frequency airborne noise
ACOUSTIC MATTING
An acoustic insulation system for wall sockets to eliminate the transfer of sound through walls
FIRE AND ACOUSTIC SOCKET BOX INSERTS
