[02] Electromagnetism Flashcards
What does Electromagnetism study?
Electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic fields and their interactions
List the main topics of study in Electromagnetism
- Coulomb’s law
- Electric fields and potential
- Magnetic fields
- Ampere’s law
- Maxwell’s equations
What is Coulomb’s law?
It describes the force between two charged particles: directly proportional to the product of their charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them
What are electric fields and potential?
- Electric field → a field around a charged particle, which exerts force on other charged particles
- Electric potential → the work done per unit charge in bringing a positive test charge from infinity to a particular point in the field
What are magnetic fields?
Fields produced by magnetic dipoles or changing electric fields
What is Ampere’s law?
It relates the integrated magnetic field around a closed loop to the electric current passing through the loop
What are Maxwell’s equations?
Four differential equations that form the foundation of classical electrodynamics, optics, and electric circuits, also playing a fundamental role in modern physics
