01 - The Greatest Inventors of All Time Flashcards
What was dug up and discovered in the first paragraph?
A human jaw bone.
Where was the jaw bone discovered?
“Near Heidelberg, in Germany” (1).
What type of bone was found in the first paragraph?
A human jaw bone.
What was found in the second paragraph?
A human skull.
Where was the human skull found?
The Neander valley, in Germany.
What made the human skull unique?
“Instead of a forehead like ours, it just had two thick ridges above the eyebrows” (2).
What did people conclude about the skull when it was found?
The owner of the old skull must have had a smaller brain due to its smaller forehead.
Why do we not know as much about the owners of the Neander skull?
The owners of the skull did not write things down, so we don’t have any cataloged history from the Neander’s people.
How would we be able to figure out when the Neander people lived?
Scientists can date things based on how materials change over time. “Certain materials, such as wood and plants and volcanic rocks, change slowly but regularly over a very long period of time” (4).
What types of tools were people discovered in Africa and Asia thought to be using?
Stone tools
Where have other old bones like the Neander skull been found?
Africa and Asia.
How far back did the Neanderthal people date compared to the Asian and African bones?
“…The Neanderthal people who appeared about seventy thousand years earlier” (4).
For about how long did the Neanderthal people inhabit the Earth?
About two hundred thousand years.
Contrary to the first belief, how big was the actual size of the Neanderthal’s brains?
“Their brains were no smaller than those of people today” (4).
What do we call history that is more speculated, estimated, and coming from before solid historical sources?
Prehistory.
Why is this stage of life on Earth called prehistory?
Because there is a lack of actual solid historical sources and catalogs, making it hard to pinpoint the exact time parts of this history took place. Prehistory shortened is the time before we are able to write down history with confidence and evidence.
With all the modern tools we have now, there at some point must have been a _____ ____.
First time.
There must have been a first of something to lead into the development of that something.
One discovery that is commonly brought up when referring to prehistory is the discovery of ____.
Fire.
“A prehistoric [person] must have realized that meat from wild animals was easier to chew if it was first held over a fire and roasted? and that one day someone discovered how to make fire?” (5).
What is one way a prehistoric person may have discovered/ created fire?
“By rubbing two sticks together until they become so hot that in the end they catch fire” (5).
What were the earliest form of man-made tools?
Stone tools.
“Tools must have been invented by someone too. The earliest ones were probably just sticks and stones. But stones were being shaped and sharpened” (6).
What was the age of the usage of the prehistoric stone tools?
The Stone Age.
Why was it called the Stone Age?
Because of the wide usage of stone based tools.
During the Stone Age, what season lasted longer than summer?
Winter.
“Winters were longer and summers were shorter. Snow lay deep throughout the year, not only on mountain tops, but down in the valleys as well” (6).
Why was it said that the Stone Age began before the last Ice Age?
Because of the long winters, year-long snow, and immense glaciers that were common during the Stone Age.
