01 - Numbers of any Magnitude Flashcards
What does it mean to round?
To shorten a number to a certain decimal or numeral.
How do I round?
If the critical digit is less than 5. you round down. However, if the digit is more than 5, you round up
What is a significant digit?
A number of digits that are meaningful.
How do I identify a significant figure?
A significant figure is the first figure that is not zero.
What is the difference between zeros in whole numbers and decimals in terms of significance?
Zeros at the end of a whole number are not significant, whereas zeros at the end of a decimal are significant.
What is an approximation?
A result that is not exact, but close enough to be used
What is an estimation?
It is to find a number that is close enough to the right number.
What is precision?
The smallet measurement available. For example, a standard ruler’s precision is 0.1 cm or 1 mm.
How do I find the absolute error?
1/2 x precision
What are the limits of accuracy
They are the endpoints for a recorded measurement. The possible upper and lower bounds.
How do I find the upper bound?
Measurement + Absolute error
How do I find the lower bound?
Measurement - Absolute Error
What is scientific notation?
It is to write numbers using powers of 10
What is another word for scientific notation
Standard forn
How will larger numbers be written in scientific notation
With positive integers
How will smaller numbers be written in scientific notation
With negative integers
How do you find the percentage error?
Absolute Error / Measurement x 100
By how much would be multiply or divide from units to convert them?
1000
By how much should be multiply or divide from digital units to convert them?
1000
