A

Construction Industry Council

  • Representative forum for the professional bodies, research organisations and specialist business associations in the construction industry
  • Aims to provide a single voice for professionals in all sectors of the built environment in the UK
  • Aims to serve society by promoting quality and sustainability, gives leadership, encourages collaboration and continuous improvement and adds value and emphasis to the work of members

National House Building Council

  • Independently regulates the new homes industry
  • Primary purpose is to raise construction standards of new homes in the UK and provide consumer protection for homebuyers
  • Roles and responsibilities:
    • Registers house builders

    • Promotes best practice

What is the CIS and what is its role?

A

Construction Industry Scheme

  • Sets out a series of rules for how contractors should make payments to sub-contractors
  • Introduced in order to prevent loss of revenue to HMRC arising from payments between contractors not being properly accounted for (for tax purposes)
  • Contractors and sub-contractors must register under the CIS with HMRC and inform them of changes to their business (e.g. submitting monthly statements detailing payments made)

  • Responsible for providing best practice guidance on the content, form and preparation of construction production information (CPI)
  • Promotes the quality of design information and collaboration in the design process
  • Author of Uniclass2 classification system, which can be used for organising information throughout all aspects of the design and construction process
  • Involved in preparing guidance for the roll-out of BIM

What is Constructing Excellence and what is its role?

A
  • Not-for-profit, cross-sector, cross-supply chain organisation charged with improving construction industry performance in order to produce a better built environment
  • One of a number of cross-industry bodies established to drive change in response to the Latham Report (Constructing the Team 1994) and the Egan Report (Rethinking Construction 1998), which concluded the industry as a whole was underachieving
  • In 2003, the other industries bodies created as a result of the reports were merged and united as Constructing Excellence
  • Activities include:
    • Lobbying to try to influence change
    • Publishing construction industry KPIs
    • Benchmarking and demonstrating projects
    • Industry awards
    • Promoting best practice and industry improvements
    • Offering accredited qualifications
  • JCT has a Constructing Excellence Contract specifically tailored for use in partnering, where participants adopt collaborative and integrated working practices
