01 - acute renal failure Flashcards
1
Q
(acute renal failure)
- abrupt cessation of renal function…
results in accumulation of nitrogenous wastes
fluid imbalances
electrolyte imbalances
A
2
Q
(acute renal failure)
- results in azotemia… which is elevation of what?
A
- BUN and serum creatinine
3
Q
- prerenal azotemia = ?
- renal azotemia = ?
- postrenal azotemia = ?
A
- decreased kidney perfusion
- primary kidney malfunction
- blockage of urine excretion
4
Q
(causes of equine azotemia)
- most common cause of azotemia in horses?
A
- hemodynamic causes (ie dehydration)
(additional causes -> acute tubular necrosis (ATN) due to renal toxins)
also progression of prerenal-induced ishemic tubular damage
5
Q
What are the 5 causes of prerenal azotemia?
A
acute enteritis, colic, prolonged exercise, acute blood loss, cardiac insuff
6
Q
what tx will correct prerenal azotemia?
A
replacement of plasma volume
(if you have ATN plus prerenal azotemia -> will often get pulmonary edema or peripheral edema once fluids have been replaced)
