01/28/23 Warning Systems Flashcards
Which switch is used to inhibit the “TOO LOW FLAPS” GPWS alert?
FLAP INHIBIT switch
Placing the switch to the FLAP INHIBIT position, inhibits ground proximity TOO LOW FLAPS alerts from occurring
When are Radio Altimeter callouts provided on an approach?
“Five Hundred”
if:
- an approach other then ILS or GLS is used, or
- A valid localizer frequency is tuned and:
• the flight path is not within +/- 2 dots of a localizer beam, or
• the flight path is not within +/- 2 dots of a Glide Slope beam, or
• a backcourse approach is detected
“Minimums, Minimums”
DH / MDA CALLOUTS The GPWS provides height callouts based on the altitude set by the Captain’s Minimums selector. Callouts are based on radio altitude when the MINS selector is set to RADIO. Callouts are based on barometric altitude when the MINS selector is set to BARO. At DH/MDA, the aural alert “MINIMUMS, MINIMUMS” is initiated.
How is an actual windshear encounter annunciated to the Flight Crew by the GPWS system?
“Windshear, Windshear, Windshear”, WINDSHEAR displayed on both PFDs as long as conditions exceed the alert threshold.
What does a red terrain elevation on the terrain elevation display indicate?
terrain elevation is more than 2000 ft above the aircraft altitude
NOTE: Values displayed are applicable to terrain that is generally ahead of the aircraft flight path. Terrain near the left and right margins of the display may not be included in the calculations.
What does pushing WX+T on the Radar Control Panel provide?
Weather Plus Threats, when pushed, displays weather radar returns and threats when operating in AUTO mode. Turbulence is displayed out to 40 nm for all selected ranges.
Is Radar Turbulence detection capable of detecting clear air turbulence?
No,
Doppler turbulence detection relies on the presence of at least light precipitation to measure precipitation velocities. Therefore, it is not capable of detecting clear air turbulence.
WX+T only provides turbulence within how much range?
40 nm.
Turbulence is displayed out to 40 nm for all selected ranges.
How is radar scanning activated?
Pressing either WXR switch.
WXR switch, when pressed without radar information displayed on either Navigation Display (ND), provides power to the Weather Radar Transmitter and displays Weather Radar information on the respective ND. When both WXR switches have been selected off, the Weather Radar Transmitter power will be removed.
How is the Predictive Windshear System activated?
WXR switch or advancing either thrust lever.
PWS may be activated by:
- selecting either WXR switch on the EFIS Control Panel (antenna sweeps alternate between windshear and weather returns), or
- advancing either thrust lever (all antenna sweeps are for windshear)
Does the weather radar provide alerting for all types of windshear?
No,
The weather radar detects microbursts and other windshears with similar characteristics. The weather radar does not provide alerting for all types of windshear. The Flight Crew must continue to rely on traditional windshear avoidance methods.
How far does the predictive windshear area extend?
3 nm
What does an aural “MONITOR RADAR DISPLAY” alert indicate?
Windshear within 3 miles and ahead of the aircraft detected by the weather radar. Enabled during takeoff and approach, below 1200 ft RA. Predictive windshear symbol on the navigation display shows windshear position (expanded MAP, center MAP, expanded VOR or expanded APP modes only).
When is the Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS) enabled?
RAAS operates automatically, without any action from the Flight Crew.
RAAS requires the following databases, conditions, or systems for proper operation:
• terrain and airport runway database in the GPWS computer
• aircraft is on or approaching an airport in the RAAS airport runway database, and
• Global Positioning System (GPS) and other required signals are both available and meet minimum accuracy requirements.
RAAS operates automatically, without any action from the Flight Crew. The EGPWS circuit breaker disables all EGPWS functionality including RAAS aural and display messages.
When is predictive windshear alerting available on the ground after the radar starts scanning?
Approximately 12 seconds after the radar begins scanning for windshear.
Alerting is not available until approximately 12 seconds after the weather radar begins scanning for windshear (activation by thrust lever advancement above 53° or WXR switch on the EFIS Control Panel).
What are the TCAS traffic advisory symbols?
