Learn the basics of Taekwondo
Who is the founder of Taekwon-Do?
Taekwon-Do is a version of an ancient form of unarmed combat practiced for many centruries in the Orient.

He was the head of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces Unarmed Division for many years.
What year was Taekwon-Do introduced?
1955
Taekwon-Do was first introduced to the world on 11th April 1955
What are the 5 tenets of Taekwon-Do?
Courtesy
Integrity
Perseverance
Self-Control
Indomitable Spirit
(Note that the order is important)
A “tenet” is a principle, belief, or doctrine generally held to be true
There are six belt colours, each of which has a different significance
What does white belt signify?
Signifies innocence, as that of the beginning student who has no previous knowledge of Taekwon-Do.
What is the word “Instructor” in Korean?
This is how you would address your instructor in class
Sabum
Always remember to address your instructor as “Sabum”!
What does the Korean word “Charyot” mean?
attention
As in, to stand to attention
You must stand up straight with your feet together, arms by your side, keeping still and looking straight ahead.
What does the Korean word “Kyong-Ye” mean?
Bow
This usually follows “Charyot” to stand to attention, then “Kyong-Ye” is your instruction to bow.
What does the Korean word “Si-Jak” mean?
Start
As in, to begin
After your instructor has told you what they want you to do, they may use this command when they want you to begin.
What does the Korean word “Guman” mean?
Stop
What does the Korean word “Barrol” mean?
Return to ready
Your instructor may give the command “Barrol” to return back to the same ready stance you used at the beginning of the pattern or movement.

Dojang
