le docteur versus le médecin?

A

En France, on a tendance à penser qu’un docteur, c’est nécessairement un médecin. On va « chez le docteur » pour dire qu’on va consulter son médecin traitant. Docteur, c’est un titre, tandis que médecin, c’est un métier, que l’on ne peut exercer que si on porte le titre de docteur en médecine.

In France, we tend to think that a doctor is necessarily a doctor. We go “to the doctor” to say that we are going to consult our doctor. Doctor is a title, while doctor is a profession that you can only practice if you have the title of doctor of medicine.
