0. Basic concepts Flashcards
What is a closed system?
A closed system is a system with no mass exchange.
What is an adiabatic process?
A process with no heat exchange (Q=0).
What is an isolated system?
A system with no heat/mass exchange.
Properties that leave the system are positive or negative?
Negative
Properties that enter the system are positive or negative?
Positive
Expansion work is positive or negative?
Negative
Compression work is positive or negative?
Positive
What are diathermal walls?
Walls that allow heat transfer.
By which properties can a simple compressible system be specified?
Pairs of these intensive or specific properties: pressure P, temperature T, specific volume v, specific internal energy u, specific enthalpy h, specific entropy s.
What are intensive properties and which are they?
Properties that do not depend on the mass of the system: pressure P, temperatur T, density.
What are extensive properties and which are they?
Properties that depend on the mass of the system: volume V, energy E, U, H, G…
What are specific properties and which are they?
Properties normalized with respect to the mass of the system: specific volume v, specific energy e, u, h…
0th law of thermodynamics:
If two bodies are in thermal equilibrium with a third body, they are also in thermal equilibrium with each other.
What is a process?
A change between equilibrium states.
What is an isothermal process?
A process with constant temperature T.
