Identity Property of Addition
Adding 0 to a term doesn’t change the term
EX: a+0=a
Identity Property of Multiplication
Multiplying a term by one does not change the term
EX: a*1=a
Multiplicative property of 0
Multiplying a term by 0 results in 0.
EX: a*0=0
Commutative Property of Addition
Changing the order of addition does not change the result.
EX: a+b=b+a
Commutative Property of Multiplication
Changing the order of multiplication does not change the result
EX: ab=ba
Associative Property of Addition
Changing the grouping of addition does not change the result
EX: a+(b+c)=(a+b)+c
Associative Property of Multiplication
Changing the grouping of multiplication does not change the result
EX: a(bc)=(ab)c
Distributive Property (of Multiplication over addition)
“a” groups of b+c
EX: a(b+c)=(ab)+(ac)
Additive Inverse Property
A term added with its opposite results in 0.
EX: a+(-a)=0
Multiplicative Inverse Property
Multiplying a term by its inverse/reciprocal will result in one
EX: a*1/a=1
(“a” is not equal to 0)
Substitution Property
“a” may be replaced with “b”
EX: a=b
Definition of Subtraction
Subtracting a number is the same as adding that number’s opposite
EX: a-b=a+(-b)
