. Flashcards
Air Pressure
It is the force exerted on a surface by the air above it as gravity pulls it to Earth
Tropical
Of, being, or characteristic of a region or climate that is frost-free with temperatures high enough to support year-round plant growth given sufficient moisture.
Celsius
scale based on 0° for the freezing point of water and 100° for the boiling point of water.
Cumulus Cloud
generally dense clouds and with sharp outlines that develop vertically in the form of rising mounds, domes or towers with bulging upper parts often resembling a cauliflower.
Cirrus Cloud
short, detached, hair-like clouds found at high altitudes
Thermometer
an instrument that measures temperature.
Tropical Depression
A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 38 mph (33 knots) or less
Ocean Current
the continuous, predictable, directional movement of seawater driven by gravity, wind (Coriolis Effect), and water density.
Dew Point
temperature the air needs to be cooled to (at constant pressure) in order to achieve a relative humidity (RH) of 100
Hurricane
a tropical storm with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles per hour or more.
Desert
arid land with usually sparse vegetation.
Typhoon
a tropical cyclone with the maximum wind of 34 knots or higher
Humidity
the amount of water vapor in the air
Forecast
a prophecy, estimate, or prediction of a future happening or condition
Atmosphere
A mixture of gases that surrounds the Earth
Hail
to cheer, salute, or greet; welcome
Thunderstorm
A rain-bearing cloud that also produces lightning.
Cloud
a visible mass of particles of condensed vapor (such as water or ice) suspended in the atmosphere of a planet (such as the earth) or moon.
Precipitation
any liquid or frozen water that forms in the atmosphere and falls back to the earth. It
Drought
a period of abnormally dry weather sufficiently prolonged for the lack of water to cause serious hydrologic imbalance in the affected area
Front
to be in an important position where you have influence, but where you are likely to be criticized or attacked
Meteorology
the science dealing with the atmosphere and its phenomena, including both weather and climate
Freezing Point
temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid.
Tornado
A violently rotating column of air touching the ground, usually attached to the base of a thunderstorm
Cumulonimbus Cloud
menacing looking multi-level clouds, extending high into the sky in towers
Thunder
the sound that follows a flash of lightning and is caused by sudden expansion of the air in the path of the electrical discharge.
Weather
used especially in reporting questions and expressing doubts) if, or not: I wasn’t sure whether you’d like it. She asked me whether I was interested in working for her.
Waterspout
Waterspouts fall into two categories: fair weather waterspouts and tornadic waterspouts. Tornadic waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water, or move from land to water. They have the same characteristics as a land tornado
Barometer
A barometer is a scientific instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure
Global Warming
Global warming is the long-term warming of the planet’s overall temperature.
Temperature
Temperature is the measure of hotness or coldness expressed in terms of any of several scales, including Fahrenheit and Celsius
Barometric Pressure
the measurement of air pressure in the atmosphere,
Funnel Cloud
A funnel cloud is a cone-shaped cloud which extends from the base of a cloud towards the ground without actually reaching the surface.
Climate
In short, climate is the description of the long-term pattern of weather in a particular area. Some scientists define climate as the average weather for a particular region and time period, usually taken over 30-years
