Classification
Kingdom (Animalia) Phylum (Chordata) Class (Mammalia) Order (Primates) Family (Hominidae) Genus (Homo) Species (sapiens)
Taxonomy
grouping organisms based on some trait or characteristic.
Linnaeus
Swedish Botanist had a system that used genus and species to name an organism. Binomial Nomenclature (Homo sapiens) Noun adjective
Dichotomous key
identifies organisms based on a series of choices between alternative characteristics.
Organism
Individual
Population
group of organisms of the same species living together (same area)
Communities
Populations of different species that coexist
Ecosystem
marine, desert, forest, tundra, etc. More complex than communities. Includes non-living things as well.
Biosphere
layer of air, land and water that envelopes the Earth.
Community Interactions
- Niche
- Predation
- Competition
Niche
The role an organism has in nature (in its habitat)
Predation
Predators obtain energy and nutrients by eating Prey
Competition
two species going after the same resource
Symbiotic relationship
Two different species interact and sometimes totally rely on each other.
Parasitism
Get energy and nutrients from their host but good ones do not kill you.
Mutualism
Interaction where both species benefit.
Commensalism
One benefits and the other is neither harmed nor benefits.
Limiting resource
the resource in a population that limits how large the population can become.
Carrying capacity
The size of a population that a habitat can support.
Density-Independent
limiting factor that does not depend on population size. (Flood, fire, hail)
Density dependent
Limiting factors that depend on population size. (Disease, parasites, predators,)
Life without the sun
1977 Chemosynthetic bacteria found
