Q

Explain why socialisation by the family is important. 2 marks

A

The family is important because it is the FIRST place that children learn how to fit into their culture. The family teaches norms and values and acceptable behaviour for children to undertake.

Q

Identify and explain two ways in which children are socialised to gender roles in the family. (4)

A

Parents act as role models for children to imitate. E.G. Girls may copy their mother looking after children by looking over dolls.

Parents use sanctions to teach us gender behaviours. For example girls will be punished more for fighting than boys would.

Q

Explain two reasons why sociologists believe in the nurture theory of behaviour. (4)

A

Sociologists believe that behaviour is nurture/learned because feral children exist. If behaviour was nature children would all grow up the same regardless of their parenting.

Cultural diversity shows nurture, BECAUSE there are differences between different cultures e.g. values. These must be learned or all cultures would be the same.
