Q

Course and end

A

The two roots unite below the foramen ovale to form a short 1 cm trunk in infratemporal fossa in front of mandible neck end by dividing into anterior small motor division and posterior sensory large nerve

Q

Branches from trunk

A

Motor branch called nerve to medial pterygoid muscle supplying medial pterygoid muscle plus tensor tympani and palati
Sensory root called nervous spinousus pass through foramen spinousm to supply dura in middle cranial cavity middle part

Q

Auriculotemporal nerve

A

Arise by 2 roots around middle meningeal artery to pass backwards deep to neck of mandible to rise within parotid gland to leave upper end behind tmj to cross zygomatic arch and reach scalp and divide to many branches

Q

Auriculotemporal branches

A

Parotid within the parotid gland to supply it and receive sympa and parasympa fibers from otic ganglion along them
Articulate to tmj
Sensory to anterior half of temple
Upper 2/3 of outer part of ear auricle
Ear drum and external auditory meatus

Q

Inferior alveolar nerve origin

A

It is the larger division of posterior division
Passing on medial pterygoid muscle behind lingual nerve to reach mandibular fossa to move in mandibular groove to reach mental foramen and divide to incisive and mental branches

Q

Inferior alveolar nerve branches

A

Nerve to mylohyoid which runs in mylohyoid groove supplying mylohyoid muscle and anterior belly digastric muscle
Mental nerve which exit through mental foramen to supply skin on chin and lower lip
Dental nerves arise in mandibular canal to supply the molars and premolar it self and canines plus incisors by incisive nerve and also supply gums and alveolar bone

Q

Lingual nerve origin

A

Behind mandible ramus:
It descends on medial pterygoid deep to lateral pterygoid and joined by chorda tympani in front of inferior alveolar nerve
Deep to mandible body:
It descends in faint groove behind molar covered by mucosa
It crosses styloglossus muscle then hypoglossus muscle where it suspends submandibular ganglion by 2 roots then hook around submndibular duct to pass deep to sublingual gland to reach side of tongue

Q

Lingual nerve branches

A

General sensory to supply anterior 2/3 tongue, gum, floor of mouth, submandibular and sublingual glands
Taste to anterior 2/3 of tongue
Parasympathetic by chorda tympani to submandibular and sublingual glands
