Flashcards

1
Q

what names bring us a complete picture of the meaning of all of Allah’s Names?

A
  1. Allah, because all attributes of divinity (and being deserving of worship) are brought together in this name.
  2. Ar-Rahman, beause all attributes of excellence, generosity and goodness come back to it.
  3. Ar-Rab, because all attributes of Lordship go back to it.

All Names of Allah can be categorised under one of these three, also all these names are brought together in surah al fatiha (so this surah is based on worship, Lordship and mercy)

Q

Is Allah the greatest Name?

A

Some say this yes, because this name is where all other names come back to, it’s the Asl. We e.g. say, Allah is ar-Rahman, not Ar-Rahman is Allah.

He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him.

Q

What two things can we take from ibn Abbas’ explanation of the Name “Allah”

A

Ibn Abbas brings two things in this explanation:
1. The attribute of the Name “Allah” is al uluhiyyah (divinity and the right to be worshipped). This is the attribute by which He deserves to be called Allah.
- Allah means: the One who truly deserves to be worshipped because He possesses all attributes of perfection.
2. Our actions to Allah in this Name: complete ubudiyyah (servitude) to Him and taking Him as our only Ilah.

19:93
Why did Allah single out IbadurRahman

A

Because they testify and have Iman that Allah is the only One deserving of worship. They were the ones who chose this servitude, to emvrace it, love it and want it. They try to put forth as much worhsip as they can with their heart, soul, speech and action in accordance with what they are able to do.

Q

What did ibn Jarir at Tabari say woth regards to the Name ar Rab

A

The word rab in the speech of the arabs has several meanings: the master who is obeyed, someone who makes something right, someone who possesses something, it could be used in other ways but every other use of rab is going to go to back to one of tgese 3 meanings. Our Lord exalted in praise, he’s the master, there is no resemblance in his doninion. Allah is the one with whom there’s no resemblance or equal in His mastery. He is the one whi makes thibgs right for His creation by putting all of His upon them. He is the owner, the One to whom all creation and command belongs to .

Summary;
It comes back to these 3 in a way that suits His majesty:
- السيد المُطاع: the master who is oveyed
- المُصلِح: the one who makes things right
- المالك: the possessor

A

General effect on creation: it covers all creation. Creating providing life
Specific effect on his awliya
Allah nurtured them and gave them the succes of iman and allowed them to be dedicated servants of Him. He nourishedvthem by knowing Him, they turn to Him in repentance, He took them from the darkness into the light. He made things easy for them and took the hard things away from them. He made everything good easy for them and protected them from every evil.

19

The dua of the people of intellect, the prophets, the ones close to Allah made dua to Allah ising the Name rab. Why?

  2. And they want to ask Allah to give them more of it.
20

A

2:21

The first command in the Quran. Worship and lordship are brought together in this aya. The Rab is the One who deserves to be worshipped alone.

21
Q

Did Allah leave His creation woth nothing to follow?

A

The fact that Allah is the Lord of the worlds means that He didnt leave His creation.
It is impossible to believe there is a creator sustainer and provider without this creator leaving a purpose. To believe there is a Rab one should also believe in a purpose. So its upon the person to find what this purpose is.

22
Q

What does the statement رضيت بالله ربا entail (I’m pleased with Allah as my Lord)?

A
  • you must be pleased with what Allah commanded you
  • you must be pleased with what Allah prohibited you
  • you must be pleased that Allah created you for the purpose of worship
  • you must be pleased with what Allah has given you
  • you must be pleased with what Allah has decreed
  • you must be pleased with what Allah withheld from you
If you’re not pleased with these things then you’re not completely pleased with Allah as your Lord.

This is easy to say but not easy to achieve, why?

A

The highest level of iman in Allah’s decree is الرضى, being content. This is much more difficult, because when something bad happens usually we can bring up patience snd acceptance, but being happy is a higher level. Also Being content and happy with what Allah commanded/prohibited. And being happy with everythibg the prophet

24
Q

What does one keep in mind to achieve the status and meaning of

A

When you believe Allah to be your only Rab, the only one who created, decreed, whatever He wills happens and whatever He doesn’t will doesn’t happen. There’s no heart except that it’s between the fingers of the most merciful and he makes it move however he wants, if he wants to he’ll make the heart firm upon islam and if he wants to he’ll turn it away. If you think of this and keep this in your mind you’re achieving the status and meaning of
You have to remember Allah’s Lordship and what it entails. Not just in Knowledge but also in implementation:;
Our feet will become strong and firm in tawhid ar ruboobiyyah, then it rises up to tawhid al ilaahiyyah.
