SMAW Flashcards
SMAW
Shielded metal arc welding
SMAW - Shielded metal
Flux coating on electrodes that protects it while you see welding
SMAW - Arc
Not fuel gas but electric arc. Electrons flowing from base material and jumping to another.
AC current
Alternating current
Operates at 60 cycles per second (60 forward AND back movements)
Changes direction 120 times per second
Cycle
A set of repeating events
Amount of times the electrons move back AND forth.
Frequency
Number of cycles per second.
60 cycles per second.
Electron
One of the fundamental parts of an atom. Carries a negative charge.
Voltage
Force that causes the electrons to flow through the circuit.
Electrical pressure
Similar to a kitchen faucet where the pressure is still there but it won’t flow until you turn it on
Amperage
Measured in amps
How many electrons are flowing/the volume
Current
Combo of amperage and voltage
Measured in amps
It is the flow of a volume of electrons
Transformers
Called step down transformer because it reduces the voltage (steps it down)
Turns high voltage, low amperage power into low voltage, high amperage power.
Rectifiers
Rectifiers are used after the transformer because the transformer brings down the volts but it is still an alternating current, so the rectifier turns it into a direct current (better for welding because it is more stable) by using a one way door.
Direct current
A current that only flows in one way
